My goal is to provide you with the best quilting service possible. There are some steps you can take to ensure
that your quilt top, backing, and batting are ready for longarm quilting.
|
1. As you piece the quilt top, keep in mind that checking the size of each completed block and/or
section is important. It's actually just as important to check block measurement as it is to sew accurate quarter-inch
seams. Check for block size accuracy!
|
2. Press your seams carefully as you are piecing. Most patterns have instructions for pressing.
Please consider pressing bulky seam intersections open to reduce bulk. Wrinkles wil not 'quilt out' of your top or backing. Press well!
|
3. Please cut the backing and batting at least 4 inches larger than the quilt top on all four sides. This
extra is necessary to attach the quilt sandwich to the longarm frame.
| |
4. Take several extra minutes to trim loose threads from the back of the pieced top. If not trimmed, these
threads may show through to the front.
|
5. If your quilt top has many pieces along the edge, it may be helpful to run a "stay stitch" seam about 1/8" from
the outside edge. This will help minimize any stretching of your quilt.
|
6. If you've prewashed the fabric for the pieced top, please prewash the backing fabric, too.
|
7. Apply your border carefully! Quilt tops with bias cut pieces or many pieces are notorious for wavy borders.
Please do not simply cut strips and sew them on the sides of your quilt tops, cutting off any leftover fabric. Although this technique is
seen in some pattern directions, it is a sure way to increase the risk of wavy borders.
|
Instead, please consider this method:
|
A. Measure horizontally across the center of your quilt top, then cut the top and bottom borders to
fit that measurement. Stitch these border strips to your quilt, easing as necessary. Press seam allowances toward the borders.
|
B. Measure vertically through the center of your quilt top, then cut the two side borders to fit that
measurement. Stitch these border strips to your quilt, easing as necessary. Press seam allowances toward the borders.
